Superman does a lot in his newest adventure. Archvillain Lex Luthor, determined to make the world safe for nuclear arms merchants, creates a new being to challenge the Man of Steel: the radiation-charged Nuclear Man. The two super-powered foes clash in an explosive screen extranvaganza that sees Superman save the Statue of Liberty, repulse a volcanic eruption of Mount Etna, rebuild the demolished Great Wall of China and perform many more spetactular feats.
Lex Luthor steals a hair of Superman's head from a museum and uses it to create Nuclear Man, an android that gets energy from the Sun. His purpose of course is to use him as a weapon to kill Superman, so that Luthor will be free to realize his criminal plans.
This is a truly frustrating film. Somewhere in this mess is a good film that isn&#39;t allowed to break free, haphazard and lazy direction from a mediocre director and two very lame scriptwriters make sure of that.<br/><br/>The idea in itself isn&#39;t bad. Superman becomes active in disarming the world of nuclear weapons but his arch nemesis Lex Luthor still holds a grudge against the Man of Steel and devices a plan to get rid of him; by creating a super villain of his own.<br/><br/>Reeve shares co-credit story this time around but he&#39;s not responsible for the terrible script. There are good things floating around but executed in the poorest manner. And what&#39;s more the special effects are terrible, I can&#39;t believe they saved money on that front. The film moves along too fast, clocking in at under 90 minutes and some interesting angles are not explored nearly well enough.<br/><br/>So what&#39;s good here? Well, Reeve of course. He IS Superman and once again delivers a fantastic performance and shows all too well that he&#39;s way too good for this film. Margot Kidder is good as well but her role is minimal and Jackie Cooper appears all too briefly. So that leaves Hackman. Of course it&#39;s good to see him, he&#39;s a very good actor, but one can&#39;t help but think he got a big paycheck and simply did what he had to and nothing more. He doesn&#39;t look too excited.<br/><br/>A wasted opportunity this film. Could have been very good but looks incredibly rushed and made without passion. But it&#39;s always good to see Reeve in flying action.
The first &quot;Superman&quot; movie was excellent. &quot;Superman 2&quot; was good. &quot;Superman 3&quot; seemed like a comedy because Richard Pryor was in it. &quot;Superman 4&quot; is totally awful for two reasons: Nuclear man was a loser villain with long, sharp finger nails, who had a crummy costume, and a bad attitude. The plot seemed hard to understand. The only good part was at the end when Superman threw Nuclear man into the nuclear reactor core. Too bad this film didn&#39;t join him. I give &quot;Superman 4&quot; an F for having a hard plot and a totally lame villain.
Superman IV is a pathetic appendage to the series, a dull, shoddy film that makes the minimal 1950s TV series seem rife with production values by comparison. [27 July 1987, p.10C]
Again, this is simply writers ignoring physics for the sake of &quot;good visuals&quot;.<br/><br/>7. An object as large as a building (i.e. the Statue of Liberty carried around by Nuclear Man and later Superman) could not be held up horizontally by only one small area a few feet wide on one of its ends. Such a huge amount of weight throughout the length of the building would cause too much stress along the unsupported areas and cause it to break apart.
